Gender-Inclusive Outfit Ideas for Your Newborn Family Photoshoot

If you’ve pre-booked a newborn session with me, you know I’ll be at your house within about a week of baby’s delivery. To make things for your session go smoothly, let’s go ahead and plan your outfits now!

Moms and Momlike figures

  • Comfort is key! This is your home, your photoshoot – prioritize what makes you feel relaxed and confident. Flowy dresses, comfy jumpsuits, or favorite pajamas – anything that lets you enjoy those precious newborn snuggles.

  • Give yourself flexibility - if you’re the birthing parent, it’s hard to know exactly what your body will be like only a few days postpartum, so opt for soft and stretchy. Kindred Bravely comes recommended by maaany parents for super-soft and long-lasting loungewear, nursing bras, underclothes, and more.

  • Accessorize for you! Delicate necklaces (I love this dainty custom birthstone one), stacked bracelets, or statement earrings (these drippy bows are super cute) can add a touch of personality. Just avoid anything too dangly that might snag on the little one.

Dads and Dadlike Figures

  • Feel free to keep in casual. Think comfy pants, and maybe a button-down shirt over a solid or cool graphic tee. Dad jokes are always welcome to lighten the mood.

  • Neutrals photograph beautifully. Khakis, grays, and blues complement your partner's outfit and the baby's natural cuteness.

  • Don't forget comfort underfoot. Sneakers or loafers are ideal for maneuvering around during the photoshoot.

Non-Binary Parents and Partners

  • Celebrate your unique style! This photoshoot is a celebration of your beautiful family. Wear whatever makes you feel confident and fabulous, be it a bold jumpsuit, a flowy skirt, or a classic suit.

  • Coordinate loosely, if you wish. Discuss color palettes or patterns you both love, or focus on individual pieces that make you feel amazing.

  • Accessorize to express yourself. Let your personality shine through with statement jewelry, a cool hat, or a vibrant scarf.

And of course….the baby :)

  • Keep it suuuper simple is my best recommendation. Newborns like to stay warm and snuggly, and tie-up onesies are one of the easiest outfits to change into and switch out in case of a poop explosion, etc.

  • Skin time for newborns is so sweet! If you’re wearing layers, consider removing everything but the baby’s diaper and snuggling up skin to skin for some intimate, super-snugly portraits :’)

Overall!

  • Solid colors tend to photograph best. Avoid busy patterns that might compete with the star of the show (your precious newborn!).

  • Layers are your friend. Homes can sometimes get chilly, so bring a cardigan or light jacket for you and your partner.

  • A loose color theme can create a cohesive look. Discuss some color palettes or vibes you both like, but there are no strict rules!

  • Confidence is key! When you feel good, it shows, and those happy vibes will translate beautifully into your photos.

Remember, this photoshoot is about capturing the love and joy of your new family in the comfort of your own home. So relax, have fun, and let your personalities shine through!
